As is the case in many American cities, Ironton is adopting International Code Council building codes. These codes help ensure that Ironton buildings are constructed or modified in a safe manner. In April 2022, the Ironton Board of Aldermen adopted the International Residential Code (IRC). The City will implement the IRC effective August 1, 2022.

Generally, the provisions of the IRC shall apply to the construction, alteration, movement, enlargement, replacement, repair, equipment, use and occupancy, location, removal, and demolition of detached one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses not more than three stories above grade plane in height with a separate means of egress and their accessory structures not more than three stories above grade plane in height.

Effective August 1, 2022, any of the above activities will require an Ironton Building Permit, before construction is begun. Building Permits will be available from the Ironton City Hall.
